The Mysteries of Udolpho

Gothic horror and gothic romance were emerging genres when Pride and Prejudice was published. The Mysteries of Udolpho, released in May 1794, influenced an entire generation of writers, including Austen, Charles Dickens, William Thackeray, Walter Scott, and Dostoevsky.

For all our book advertisements, we created front-page layouts inspired by the title page of the original first edition. The image of a lone woman wandering the gothic castle of Udolpho is both mysterious and chilling, an unsettling invitation that draws the reader into her journey.
